Wrong notion

If u sit till late hours in the office you are considered very hard working and the boss is impressed.

I know not all bosses are thus, but since mine is, what can be done abt it?! Ofcourse he is also impressed by good work etc but he always thinks that if ppl sit till late in the office, they r extremely hard working! I've also tried hinting subtely abt it, but he is strong on his hold esp considering that he is of the old school of thought!

Suggestions welcome to enlighten him! ;)

Very True!!! Most of the managers whom I have come across were like that... Because of that now I ended up being used to going back home late :(
One way to handle this is to leave by your usual time, but keep sending him updates email... slowly he will realize your a efficient worker, you finish work fast :)
This is how I am fooling my manager :)
BTW, yennanga yen blog pakkame kanom... busy'a??? :)

Thats one stupid thought that most ppl have. I have known guys in my proj who would come like Govt Babus at 11 claiming that they stayed late till 3. One day I found that all they were doing was listening to songs of chatting with their GFs.
Simple thing....either change him...or you better change the project :-)
Illana...mail him from ur house at arnd 11 or 12 reg proj updates :-)

H2bbe: Unga tag eppavo finish achu, unga commenta kanomey???

If you wanna leave early as kk said, start for 2 days a week and then slowly you can pick it up. If not go little late in the morning and come home late.

I am often targeted (mockingly ofcourse) by my colleagues for staying on late, coz I havent got 'responsibilites' back home, LOL. I guess my Principal is impressed too, with my staying late, but a few of my colleagues make it a point that they prove that staying back has got nothing to do with efficiency. And some of them have done wonderfully well for themselves.

When my youngest came across this problem, her boss told right out she MUST stay to seven at night AT LEAST once a week. She calmly told him that her salary was based on a forty hour week, when she was there the forty hours she was working, and that she had a life out of the office including family, volunteering, and working on her personal fitness goals. Not stopping there she pointed out to him that by her keeping her commitment to these others things his company was getting a happier, more well rounded, more productive employee instead of an unhappy employee that worked all the time.

She then backed it up by being sure to leave by five that day and she really believes her boss gained respect for her for standing up for herself and explaining the importance of a life out of the office.

haaaaaaa you are asking for the key to open a secret chamber to people who are in search for the key???? I really don't know how to bring those bottled notions of such people into believing that quality should be a criteria and not quantity, but this sure might be a way out as a probable hint....you can produce better quality of work than those dedicated souls in less time and report to your boss. there is every chance that he might get the cue, if he doesn't you might have to repeat it quite a few times.

    try telling your boss that

    It worked with my boss

  • At 9:38 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Aaaah, I am suffering from this problem too!

Just like artnavy, I should consider the person inefficient (except in certain cases).. but why don't the bosses understand this?

Hmm, try telling him this, he will ask us back, you trying to teach me? :)

It's not exactly the best situation, considering the implications of working overtime might have on your family, and personal life.H2bme, I do have a Tip, you can set up a "Rule" to delay sending of the emails for a later time, using outlook settings.which could trick your Boss into believing you are still at the office...just kidding!
    carry on with your writing.:)

  • At 4:13 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

hey just another tip ,If you are asked to overstay, make yourself look completely stressed out ,your boss will be more than likely to ask you to leave home early ;)

my boss is from the same school! and he doesnt seem to appreciate that i leave a bit early these days, that is, even after putting 12 hours minimum!!! he's now complaining to my juniors that "in those days, Mukund used to work till 2 at night n come back to work by 7.30 next morning...."!!

  • At 12:07 AM, Blogger KK said…

HTBM, one more idea... if your using Microsoft outlook for email at office, you can send email delayed by setting the time. So before you leave you can set the time to some late hours and leave so your boss will get an impression your coming soon and going late :)

Really I too cant understand this, if you can finish all ur work in time then what's the point in staying late!! But seems like it REALLY matters!

  • At 7:38 AM, Blogger Sat said…

    Oh!
so you got one of 'those' bosses huh? Seriously, now that is a problem. I've had a few such bosses in the past, but never bothered to change my routine (may be that's why i've never been so popular in their cirle!). You keep your work on track; and even then if he has a problem, well you can always talk to him on that (frankly with such old schools, being subtle doesn't help much. being assertive might turn things to your favour to soem extent)

But then if you have to stay back so that you do not end up being on his hitlist, stay back, but don't work, after all your blog is just an 'alt-tab' away ;)

I have an idea too. One late night call your boss from work - pump up the music - make a lot of background noise. Tell him its impossible to work late since he others are partying in the office - in the after hours. Make sure he hears all the dhamaal. Ask him - wouldnt he rather you finished your work early - and left before all this noise begins. he'll get the point.
Or better still - tell him when you work late - the cabbies refuse to take you home (provided you dont have a car) - as a WOMAN - its UNSAFE. highlight both the words. I have yet to meet a boss - who wont melt at that one.
