Special days

I was just wondering how everybody celebrates special days. Special days like Birthdays, anniversaries, promotions etc.

For sure these 'celebrations' used to be more fun & more exciting while still in skool/college I feel. Cos more friends, more time, less commitments, & lesser responsibilities too! And when you r younger u do look fwd to growing up! But I guess after a certain point u don't want to get older anymore!!! Isn't it? ;p

So how does one bring back the joys of celebration & the enthusiasm back into their life?!

Pls do lemme know how u make those certain days special & how u celebrate with ur family. :)

Well, some people are so crazy about these celebrations. They like to go out and eat out with their friends. But to me a celebration is best when I am home. No great preparations need to be done. The feeling that you are safe at home with your family is the best feeling that I have enjoyed ever! :-) No better place to be than your home and no better celebration than a family get together! :-)

Most festivals are pretty bland for us here in the US. We don't have the excitement we used to have at home. Luckily we do have some cousins in the same area, so most of our special days consist of meeting all relatives in the area and eating together. Actually, that's a lot of fun :)

in our office, we end up treating for almost all occasions. B'days are still special to me. I see to it that all my friends and relatives to wish me, even if I have to remind them , I do it unashamedly.

I love receiving gifts, even at this age. So. let me tell you my b'day falls on Feb 18, mark iton ur calender and wish me that day!! When is your b'day? Scorpio : It must be sometime now. Hw abt an e-party?

Sure lovely way to celebrate with family. But how do u celebrate with family? Like is there a special dish made or how?

    DNA,
I know it can be a gr8 time with relatives around. And do u meet up with them even during bdays & anniversaries etc?

    Chitra,
wow! Sure have noted ur bday & shall wish u! Nice 2 note the way u celebrate with friends! I also like 2 receive gifts & I do give gifts to the close ones. And as regards my bday, it is tomorrow! :)

Hi...you are right....bithdays were certainly more special and exciting back in school and college, and anniveraries more exciting the first couple of times!

And the question of how to put the joy back into the celebration is an interesting one.....I don't think the same essence and feeling can ever be captured..

I don't know how much gifts would do it for me, cos my husband nd I swore off giving tangible store bought gifts to each other, but if something is creatively done, with a lot of thought and artfulness, and a big element of surprise, then I think it is bound to delight!

I still think a big huge truly surprising surprise party with all the ones you love and cherish, a prt of it, would be a happy time indeed.

For me , food and celebration go hand in hand. This year for Rajesh's bday, I happened to be in Salem and he was in Chennai. So I sponsored for a full lunch at the orphanage. Beofre their meal, the kids prayed for the well being of Rajesh and his family which I thought was very moving, I Plan to do the same for my birthday and our wedding anniversary.
After we returned, I baked a cake for Rajesh for his bday and we celebrated with family in the US. Both were fun.
I like to be surprised, but prefer it to be a celebration with just the two of us.
Which part of the world do U live, if I may ask?
Wish you a wonderful Birthday tomorrow!

Many happy returns of the day!! Oh, wearing colour dress, giving chocolates to everyone, having payasam/sweets prepared specially by Amma, ah, those good old(!) (birth)days!!
Like you said, when young, all we wanted to do was grow up fast and now every birthday reminds us of how old we are getting!! These days I even feel so shy to thank those who call to wish me!!
Like most, eating out(the one time I can change the cuisine), if it is my birthday and cooking the birthday boy/girl's favourite is our kind of celebration.

i make it a point to be at home on my birthday, that is one day i make it a point to celebrate with my family. When in school/college the party was always at home with friends coming over. Later on it was no party just one-two close friends who just came over at my place. now i celebrate my birthday with my dad and mom, and really no one else in the world knows how to make u feel really special.

Like Tara said we don’t give any gifts to each other either.. As long as hubby remembers the day it’s a big present itself;-)) We eat out (take out) a lot in general so eating out on any special days is not any different. Before kids it was always with friends as they used to throw surprise parties but after few years we used to go on long drives and now after my daughter is born I just want hubby to take care of both for ½ day when I can relax & watch tv:-)

    Gils,
Thank u ma! Kandipa oru big treat & hot choco fudge umm just 4 u! :) U know even I;ve been thinking of going 2 the orphanages here ( I normally do so fr my son's bday) but then its not the same as doing it in our country where the kids can relate 2 u & talk 2 u. Guess its a language / culture barrier. But I think I wld just go & donate something but might not spend much time there.

    s0ul,
LOL @ headache 4 friends! So guess u wld be getting headaches often too?! ;)

    I2W,

    Happy Bday madam!Eppo treat?
First part...celebrations...well...now its restricted to treat with my friends.
As for bringing back enthusiasm in life...personally I believe that a trip to some place for 2 or 3 days is like one hell of a recharging to the body system.
As for with family is I would prefer one quiet day at home eating my amma's food and hearing her talk. With relatives nothing equals the euphoria of a marriage. The pulling the leg of bride or bridegroom, the vetti banter, the joy of watching new gals arnd :-). Total fun.

Whenever I have all of my kids around me it is a celebration. Celebrations ALWAYS consist of favorite foods, and lots of laughter. I am also big on meaningful gifts rather than just buying something to be able to say you did. A special poem, letter, or redeamable coupon for a service are among my favorites.

ur right. When we were kids, those special days seem VERY special. But right now it's just a calendar date :):) Anyways, one can still celebrate those days with alot of lively spirits by just enjoying life as it is. I mean when a special day comes ard, I always think abt what Im really celebrating...is it just a custom or is there some real meaning behind this celebration. I try to apply something to my life from that celebration...then it becomes more lively and meaningful :)

    Hope this helps.

I dont know, but I think there's a change, a different kind of joy when you spend your birthday when you get older. It might be a full blast party in the corner room of the hostel when the hostel warden is asleep or a quiet meet with a group of friends for coffee and chat, or your starnded in an airport, where no one gives you a courtesy smile, but your smile coz you know that the day is special. :)

Belated wishes, and its great to be commenting after quiet a gap.

    cheers,

okie here i say you one of the specially unspecial day of my life that i celebrated yesterday _ yes yesterday was the day - that found my cry of quest for living heard 28 years before.

Simple another day to be alone - walking up aroun 8 am washing cloths, listening to music , a long walk for 6 km cycling for 2 km - jackdanial whisky with a movie " how to loose a guy in 10 days" some short stories in tamil magazine that i collected at singapore during last week trip. few phone calls to friends who means so much in life than relatives or family members - thinking about tommorrow in dim light and then a delciious food befor going to sleep.

Thatz how the specially unspecial day was celebrted with myself and virtual friends around the globe. Family comes next priority before friends to me. And i am termed - i have to grow up as i am bit eccentric heiehei

I took all festival and social occasions for granted as long as I was in India. But when I relocated to the USA, I started thinking differently. I even made it a point to come up with a New Year's resolution to celebrate Indian festivals !!

I would love to spend some time with my parents and loved ones. I like formality and traditional rites to a certain extent. Above all, I would love for these occasions to be social occasions !

You are right as children our joys of celebration were unalloyed. I guess when we grow up we become fussy and kill joy with false vanity. And this becomes the greatest obstacle in the face of celebrating festivals wholesomely. May be just a change of our attitude can help, we can stop being matured and learned and enjoy ourselves as kids do. Sorry if i sound pedantic.
