Assumptions

The other day, my husband, his colleague & I were walking towards the car park after a function. My husband's colleagues' wife left earlier on as she had to rush else where. As we were walking towards the car, it so happened that I was chatting with my husband's colleague & my hubby was walking a step ahead of us.

Another lady who was getting inside her car, assumed that I was the colleagues wife, & said bye Pushpa! And I smiled & said I am not Pushpa! And she was totally embarassed.

This got me thinking as to how this lady just assumed that I was Pushpa just cos I was walking with her husband. And mind you, Pushpa looks much different from me...she is 'extra' small made & much shorter than me! How she took it for granted!

I then realised how we all take many things for granted and assume things sub consciously, albeit right or wrong. And we are so caught up in our own web that sometimes we fail to see the brighter side of things. Make a conscious effort not to drown in your own assumptions and reach out to the stars!

True !! This happens many times. We all seem to have a point of view and we fail to think otherwise. This sometimes leads to a lot of confusions. Even small assumptions matter.

Once, I remember how foolish my assumption was. I had packed lunch for my hubby and since I'm doing it all on my own only for a week now I was curious to know how did he like it. But, that night he came late and I slept well before and couldn't ask him abt this. The next day, I asked him what to pack for lunch (as there were 3 varieties of food). He told me "No curd rice please". Immediately, I assumed I did not make curd rice properly the previous day and that's why he doesn't want it. This was troubling me for 2 hours till I finally called him and clarified. He just laughed at my stupid assumption..me too ;-).

As long as we have predefined ideas, we make mistakes. But, the lady might have taken some more time to look at u before saying hi.

Assumptions are fine, as long as you take care to confirm it, before acting based on it.

it was not really an assumption.....just that she didnt bother to even see who it was...and that is what we need to change...

when we meet people or greet them we dont even take a minute to do it properly or genuinely....

In your situation this is how INDIAN mind works.. If we see three people(2 guys a girl) together and whoever is standing closer to girl is considered her/his partner. Our minf refuse to think that they might be friends talking about their same interest whie her hubby is just standing doing something else.

I call is our narrow mindness blinding the way we think(My opinion)

some assumptions r harmless..only just embarassing. But some other assumptions can be very costly. Like taking things and people for granted.

Very true...Race, religion, social class, even by appearance - everyone and everything falls nicely into some slot which we have created and we continue on without really determining if we are right or wrong.

Its unfortunate that we have lost so many opportunities to make our life that much more richer, but its even more unfortunate that we are never even aware of our folly!

    mof2,
Rightly said! Its more our indian attitude!

    Starry,
Yes we shdnt make the wrong assumptions! Guess if we become more conscious abt it, we can avoid the same.

    Sush,
Yes as long as we are aware of our state of mind it shdnt be so bad I guess!

    Ram,
Bang on dot! If we become more aware of our actions wld make things much better. :)

There is a saying that goes, "When you assume, you make an ass out of u and me." You make the point that there is truth to that statement. It is good to be reminded of this, and I thank you for it.

some times assumptions really lead to embarassing situations but most of the time they shape the course of interaction with others. I guess these things are ingrained and difficult to eradicate. many exercies in workshops try to rid us of our arrumptions & make us think laterally.

Assumptions can be disappointing many a time... With a splendid starcast & charttopping music, KJ disappointed us with KANK while with no well known names Mohit Suri had a winner in Kalyug.
Sometimes living upto assumptions people carry about you can be a big BURDEN!

Intersting episode we laugh in our family : My dad and his dad were once walking together and a friend mentioned that did your brother come or nice to see the brothers together or something like that. So either my dad was old or my grandfather was so young to be tagged as brother. We still poke fun at my dad referring to this :)
